Johannesburg
Ondanks het inzicht dat vooruitgang het milieu aantast zijn er pogingen gedaan om het gat tussen milieu en het gebruik van moderne technology te dichten. Veel urbane gsm zendmasten zijn in Johannesburg gesitueerd in omgevingen van weelderige vegetatie. Om deze reden zijn veel van de gsm masten in deze stad vermomd als boom.
Een woordvoerder bij het telefoonbedrijf Vodacom verklaart dat de eerste drie vermomde masten aanvankelijk de vorm hadden van een palmboom, ontworpen door Brolaz Projects. Dit is opmerkelijk te noemen aangezien de palmboom niet eens deel uitmaakt van de inheemse boomsoorten die de stad rijk is. Sinds de palmboom zijn meer bedrijven overgegaan tot het vermommen van de gsm zendmasten.
Het ironische is dat veel van de vermomde masten nogal contrasteren met hun omgeving. De variaties die in Johannesburg te vinden zijn: pijnbomen, geelhout bomen en zelfs windmolens en vuurtorens.
De serie ‘The Largest Man Made Forest in The World’ is het resultaat van een fotografisch onderzoek naar de locaties en verschijnsingsvormen van als boom vermomde gsm masten. Dit onderzoek vond plaats tijdens een residency bij The Bag Factory in Johannesburg.
