Waterwegen Wegen

Waterwegen Wegen is a monumental artwork created by Hans Wilschut for the Rijkswaterstaat Zeeland building in Goes. The work brings together three seemingly different situations: a dry dam in the Karoo, an unfinished viaduct in Cape Town and the Krammer locks in Zeeland. Through this combination, Wilschut explores how infrastructure orders, cuts through and gives meaning to the landscape. Roads and waterways appear not only as functional systems, but as spatial interventions in which ambition, control, stagnation and flow exist side by side.

The artwork connects to the world of Rijkswaterstaat, but does not approach it in an illustrative way. Rather than presenting infrastructure as a purely technical subject, Wilschut looks at the tension between design and reality: at constructions that direct movement, create barriers, promise connections or reveal their own unfinished state. In doing so, the work links the daily working environment of Rijkswaterstaat to broader questions about human intervention in the landscape.
