3 in Beeld

3 in Beeld takes place in 2018 in the former V&D department store in the centre of Alphen aan den Rijn. On invitation from Cultuurpalet, work by Ellen Kooi, Gerco de Ruijter and Hans Wilschut is brought together by curator Cees Verboom. The exhibition is staged in a temporarily available building in the middle of the city, which means the presentation is closely shaped by the vacancy, the scale of the site and its public character.

Within 3 in Beeld, the landscape is the central point of departure, although the three photographers approach that subject in very different ways. Precisely through those differences, the exhibition shows how varied the landscape can be within contemporary photography: as a constructed space, as pattern, as urban reality and as a projection of human intervention. Within that context, Hans Wilschut’s work takes its place through an approach in which the built environment, spatial organisation and the tension between observation and construction become visible.
At the same time, the exhibition functions as more than a presentation of works alone. In the period that follows, Cultuurpalet develops a range of educational activities in and around the exhibition for primary schools in Alphen aan den Rijn. In that sense, 3 in Beeld also becomes a place where looking, learning and imagination come together, and where photography gains a public and educational afterlife in the middle of the city.
