Transposing The Common
In 2009 Hans Wilschut presents work at Eastlink Gallery in Shanghai in the exhibition Transposing the Common, together with Chinese artist Shao Wenhuan. The exhibition brings together two photographic practices that look at the everyday urban environment from different cultural and visual positions.
For Wilschut, whose work often deals with the city as a place of transition, construction and shifting social meaning, Shanghai forms a charged context: a metropolis in rapid transformation, where architecture, infrastructure and public life seem to rearrange themselves almost daily. Seen from the present, Transposing the Common marks an early moment in Wilschut’s ongoing engagement with the global urban landscape and with the ways in which ordinary places can carry wider stories about growth, movement and change.
