Danger and Beauty
Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) is to Great Britain what Rembrandt is to the Netherlands. Few artists have influenced the history of art as profoundly as he did. French Impressionism, as seen in the work of Claude Monet, and Dutch Luminism, as practiced by Jan Toorop and Jan Sluijters in their attempts to capture the pure sensation of light in paint, are hardly conceivable without Turner. Although he drew on classical and mythological narratives and on seventeenth century Dutch landscape painting, he went on to forge new paths beyond the beaten track of his contemporaries.
With this two venue exhibition, Rijksmuseum Twenthe and Museum de Fundatie reveal Turner’s pivotal role in European art history. It is the first museum presentation in the Netherlands in thirty five years to place his work at the center. At Rijksmuseum Twenthe, visitors encounter Turner’s paintings, watercolours, sketchbooks, and drawings, alongside the works that inspired him. The museum also presents work by artists who were inspired by Turner, including Claude Monet, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Marino Marini, Anne Wenzel, Erik Odijk, and Hans Wilschut.
