44 Jaar Kunst in Quarantaine
Built in the 1930s to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, the nationally listed Quarantine Facility at Beneden Heijplaat in Rotterdam was taken into use by artists in 1979. This book pays tribute to the art and culture created at the QI and argues for preserving its studios and living spaces for artists in a changing city. It highlights the wide range of projects developed over four decades and the QI’s importance as a place of artistic production.
For many years, the small green peninsula was caught up in the development of the Port of Rotterdam. In 2024, the artists were ultimately forced to leave the QI site. With this book as a lasting monument, the authors aim to underline the importance of cultural hubs to Rotterdam’s identity.
