The Duration Of Elsewhere
The Duration of Elsewhere brings photography and video together in an exhibition about a slower rhythm of looking and experiencing. Especially in the urban environment, Hans Wilschut searches for ways to give more attention to what unfolds in public space. His images often take just a little more time, and within the everyday there remains a persistent sense of longing for another place.
In Hans Wilschut’s work, that “elsewhere” is constantly shifting. Sometimes it appears in the form of an unexpected season in a city where you would not expect it. Sometimes the city resembles a film set, in which architecture keeps returning as the backdrop to daily life. The work moves between two ways of seeing: the direct moment of photography and the more fluid temporality of video, in which time does not come to a halt but is instead stretched.
In this exhibition, we see a wide ranging selection of works through which Wilschut proposes a different tempo in response to the rapid stream of visual input that passes us by each day. It is less about demanding attention, and more about creating space for moments of slowness and contemplation. Moments in which, as a viewer, you briefly step out of the obvious and are able to look again. Sometimes that creates a slight friction, like coming home while your thoughts are still somewhere else.
