Zig Zag City /De Achterkant van Maaskant
Architecture festival Zig Zag City is a journey of discovery through Rotterdam, a route along unexpected places away from the beaten track. In this edition of the festival, we explore the Hoogkwartier, a distinctive postwar reconstruction district of a kind found only in Rotterdam.
ZigZagCity presents the special exhibition The Backside of Maaskant, in which six artists connect their work to the Industriegebouw and the city around it. In earlier times, the caretakers of large buildings often lived inside the buildings they looked after, usually on the top floor, where their apartments unexpectedly offered views over the ever-changing skyline of Rotterdam. It is precisely these former homes that now form the setting for a one-time exhibition.
Six artists from different disciplines, ranging from painting and photography to architecture, fashion, and jewellery design, transform the apartments into temporary exhibition spaces. In their work, the city comes strikingly close: raw and immediate, yet at the same time refined and poetic. The result is an exhibition in which the Industriegebouw is not merely a backdrop, but a presence in its own right, a place filled with history, views, and imagination.
Featuring work by Caroline Bijvoet, Arianne van der Gaag, Machteld van Jooligen, Florine van Rees, Lie van der Werff, and Hans Wilschut.
