As if the centuries had lost their order, Roman Baia lies in the middle of the present-day city. Baths, vaults and walls disappear into greenery and stone, only to surface again between houses, roads and terraces. Antiquity does not lie beneath the present here. It sits within it, visible and half concealed, as if refusing to become entirely past.

Beneath it all, the earth moves. Baia lies in the Campi Flegrei, where the ground has been slowly rising and falling for centuries. Bradyseism repeatedly shifts the boundary between land and sea. What once stood on dry ground disappeared beneath the water. What seemed lost later surfaced again. Even the ground here does not belong to a single time.
