The work Cochlea was made in Durban, South Africa. The empty space next to the spiral entrance of a parking garage takes on the shape of a snail shell when seen from a viewpoint straight upward. It becomes an almost kaleidoscopic architectural moment in a hectic city, a gaze that briefly detaches itself from the speed of the urban environment.
The photograph was taken at night, and that nocturnal light reveals a painterly layer in the hard concrete, so the space feels less functional and more strangely still.
