The Decumanus Inferiore, commonly known as Spaccanapoli, cuts the old city of Naples in two. The street follows the grid of ancient Neapolis, once a symbol of order and symmetry, later overgrown with baroque façades and densely packed dwellings. Beneath this thin surface lie Greek quarries and Roman aqueducts, where past and present flow seamlessly into one another.

Today, this axis has turned into a route of consumption. Where the religious and social heart of the city once beat, a continuous stream of visitors now moves through, viewing the past as a stage set. In this theatre of shops and street vendors, authenticity itself has become a commodity.
Tourism exposes a paradox here: what is presented as heritage becomes estranged under the permanent gaze of the visitor. The desire for authenticity distorts reality; looking becomes a form of possession.
