Love In

Love In is a video work made in Chongqing. At its center is a large video screen mounted on a building, showing a continuous sequence of idealized images of love, family, and marriage. Happy couples, children, and staged moments of harmony together form a visual world in which desire and social ideals are endlessly repeated.

For this work, Hans Wilschut edited the screen footage in such a way that all advertising interruptions were removed. As a result, the sequence takes on an almost uninterrupted intensity, making visible how these images project a normative idea of intimacy and the future.
Set against this polished image world, the street unfolds as a second temporality. The everyday life of passersby, traffic, and urban routines creates a parallel rhythm that does not confirm the ideals on the screen, but moves alongside them. Love In thus reveals how public image culture and daily urban life occupy the same space at the same time, without ever fully coinciding.
