Make an inquiry

During the final moments of a horse race in Seoul, Hans Wilschut did not point his camera at the horses, but at the grandstand. As the race reached its climax, he looked there for the tension of the moment: the release, the anticipation, and the collective reaction of the crowd. In the image, the grandstand becomes more than a place from which to watch. It appears as a space in which emotion accumulates, becomes visible, and spreads across the audience.

That dynamic gains additional meaning through the site itself. LetsRun Park Seoul in Gwacheon was built for the equestrian events of the 1988 Olympic Games and opened shortly afterwards as a racecourse. With its two large grandstands, capacity for tens of thousands of visitors, and long finishing straight, the complex was conceived as a carefully orchestrated environment for watching, waiting, and reacting. The track frames the race, but the grandstand frames the public. In this way, attention shifts from the spectacle on the course to the way architecture gathers tension and briefly turns a crowd into a collective.
